I saw RUSH play in 1980 - decent stoner prog rock, and I don't much care for prog rock. It was really funny as there were the usual RUSH hyper intellectual fans all about and 38 Special was the opening act. Long haired southern dirtbag rock combined with introverted intellectual show-off rock. What a combination.

I can't blame this one on a girlfriend...as there were no females in attendance. This proves that the women are indead smarter...

About two years later, I saw Iron Maiden open for .38 Special. This was "The Number of the Beast" tour and, probably, IM's first foray this far into the South. At some point, the giant automaton, Eddie, comes out and the .38 Special fan in front of me turns to his buddy and yells, "Goddamnit! What the heeeeelllllll is that?" His buddy squinted at the stage and replied "That's a tall feller!"

Eddie gets murdered:

I saw the Danny Joe Brown Band open for the Kinks in Atlanta. Danny Joe was the lead singer for, hold the applause, Molly Hatchet! Us young punks showed him no love.

First show I saw when I moved to Atlanta was the Johny Van Zandt Band opening for Foghat opening for ... The Outlaws. Hot damn!

I can't tell you how many newspapers I rolled (mebbe, fifty thousand?) listening to Foghat's "Night Shift" 8-track booming out of my dad's giant Sansuis that my mother had decided were fuckin' up living room's feng shui. And when I tired of Foghat, I had a handful of K-tels, Beach Boys "Live in London '69", half-a-dozen Elvis, and Chicago's Greatest Hits that my neighbor had RECORDED on a blank 8-track (I guess from vinyl) and gave to me if I would join Columbia House as his referral.
